You read that right. I said the team has potential.
You see, the 2009 team did something so epic that I doubt it can be topped. I mean, to top the 2009 team, the whole 2010 team would have to get hurt, including Luis Castillo AND Daniel Murphy. And David Wright would have to miss significant playing time. And I don't forsee a whole team getting hurt two years in a row. Although losing Carlos Beltran got us off to a solid start.
Okay, so the 2010 team has no pitching, no viable options at catcher and first base (but give Murph time), and a huge defensive hole in centerfield, but 2009 will not be repeated.
I don't know what's gotten into me, maybe because it's pitchers and catchers getting so close, but 2010 is a fresh slate for the Metsies. Hopefully they don't blow it.
What do you guys think?
I'm with you. I think that the pitchers will bounce back too, especially Pelfrey. I'm expecting big things from him.

Right now, the way things stand, I'd be happy if this team did what the 2005 team did. That team improved from a 71-91 mark under Art Howe in 2004 to an 83-79 under Willie Randolph in 2005. First thing they have to do is get healthy and stay healthy. If that can happen, I don't see why they can't finish with a similar record to the 2005 team. It's just too bad that the Philthies, Marlins and Braves did more in the offseason than the Mets did (Sgt. Bay of The Yukon was the only major transaction the Mets made), so even improving to 83-79 might not get them out of fourth place.
